Top Down Tourers

I am looking to start a Sunday afternoon convertible club at Sonrise Church for the purpose of fellowship and fun. The post will be part of my research and planning. We will taking afternoon jaunts on Sunday afternoon. It will be focused on convertibles, day trips and scenic destinations and routes but not limited to convertibles only. Anyone is welcome.

My initial plan will be to plan for routes roughly about 2 hours from Hillsboro, OR. Ending at a scenic destination or a place for coffee or a snack and then return home. Photography could be a theme of some as well. A short hike included or even a swim in a cool river or lake.

The routes will be scenic and not focused on performance or aggressive driving but cruising and enjoying.

My early searches gave me these pages to study. I will also check trails.com as there are driving trips on there as well.

A great idea is to look for local events like fairs or markets or local attractions in nearby towns or communities that we can drive to an experience. Maybe even a car show or cruise in! I can also look at trips and adventures other car clubs or motor cycle clubs have gone on or maybe tag along with them if they are open.

I am sure there are meet up groups planning similar trips that I can check out and get ideas from as well.

6 Must-See Day Trips from Portland

2. Willamette Valley

In 1979 celebrated French wine and food magazine, GaultMillau, organized a wine Olympics bringing together a total of 330 wines from 33 countries. When a Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley placed in the top 10 of their category, the region was catapulted to international fame. Beginning 100 miles southwest of Portland, the Willamette Valley boasts more than 250 wineries. It also plays host to the celebrated International Pinot Noir Celebration every July. A journey here is not complete without a stop in Portland, a city whose wine is perhaps only bested by its limitless dining options. Also not to miss is Domain Serene in rural Dayton, OR, where you can ponder which is more fantastic, their Pinot Noir or their picturesque views.

Columbia River Gorge

It’s incredible to find such natural beauty so close to a major city. Mere minutes out of Portland, Oregon, starts the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Drive the Oregon side for stunning views of waterfalls, some of which you can see without leaving the freeway. For a more intimate drive, get off the Interstate and cruise Historic Highway 30. Watch the scenery change from lush forest to high desert as you go east. Be sure to spend some time in quaint towns along the way like Hood River, Cascade Locks and The Dalles.

How a Road Trip Helps you Experience Local Culture

Are you trying to decide where to go for your next vacation? Instead of flying, try a road trip. A road trip will help you find off-the-beaten-path destinations, and it’s a great way to get to meet locals. Here’s how a road trip lets you experience local culture.

Visit Unique Small Towns

Often, when people are traveling, they seek out famous tourist sites and big cities. But there are plenty of fascinating things to see and people to meet in those out-of-the-way small towns that dot the highway. When you’re on your road trip, take the time to stop in these small towns. You could visit for lunch, or do some shopping. While you’re there, you’ll be able to talk to locals.

Check Out Local Events

A road trip also makes it easy to go to the types of events that are mostly attended by locals. This includes festivals, farmer’s markets, and holiday celebrations. Many small towns have their own unique events that celebrate their town’s unique history and traditions. This is an especially great option for traveling with kids–they’ll love getting the chance to try out fun new celebrations and festivals. After you map out your trip, research the towns you’ll be passing and see if they have any special events that are worth checking out. If there are a few events that look really interesting, plan your trip around them.

Stay With Locals

Websites like AirBnB make it easier than ever to find homes to stay in on the road. Instead of staying in hotels, try using these types of websites to connect with town residents. This is one of the best ways to meet local people and to get to know about the towns you’re passing through. You’ll end up with many more stories and memories in these types of accommodation than you would if you only stayed in hotels.

Whether you’re going on a famous route 66 road trip or making up your own route, plan time to meet locals. Once you have planned your itinerary, hit the road and go experience local culture!

Hiking Trials near Portland to Explore in 2016

I am researching my activities for the year and am thinking hiking and waterfalls will make up most of it.

Here are the links that I am using to start my research:

Psalm 35:1-16

Malicious witnesses testify against me.
They accuse me of crimes I know nothing about.
They repay me evil for good.
I am sick with despair.
Yet when they were ill, I grieved for them.
I denied myself by fasting for them,
but my prayers returned unanswered.
I was sad, as though they were my friends or family,
as if I were grieving for my own mother.
But they are glad now that I am in trouble;
they gleefully join together against me.
I am attacked by people I don’t even know;
they slander me constantly.
They mock me and call me names;
they snarl at me.

The idea of praying for those that hate you and loving your enemy was not a brand new concept conceived only in the New Testament. It is found also in the heart of David in the old. Moses also intercede on the behalf of the Israelites even when they attacked him. I would also say that since these two men were men who lived near to the heart of God, that this has always been the heart of God. That would also be supported by the fact that Jesus came to reveal God’s heart,  to live it out so it could be seen in perfect action not to create something new or different from God but a completed revelation of what has always been God’s heart snd his desire for us.

Proverbs 9:11-12
New Living Translation (NLT)

Wisdom will multiply your days
and add years to your life.
If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit.
If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer.

Pellet Guns

I have always had a thing for air rifles from shooting in the backyard, my indoor range in the garage or starting the kids out on safety, control, aiming etc. Pistols as well but there are more options and more capacity in the rifle category for sure.

Recently, I got back into it after a break and one of springers, actually my best springer, did not survive the hiatus that well. I started looking at options as I actually wanted to move up to a better rifle anyway but compressed air. I looking at my options, the single pump air springs, Nitro springs, etc had really improved since the last time time I was looking at them.

I am thinking I am about to buy another gun. I will post the links here as a research tool and book mark location for the guns and info I access.

Here is info on the Air Spring/Gas Ram/Nitro Piston Technology

Word Press new editor I hate I hate!

I really dislike the new form and function or lack there of in the new WordPress. I am going to research what I can find out about not using but keeping my blog. I believe there are ways to access the old dashboard, edit, stats and admin pages that will allow me to continue to edit and add too my blog.

Here are some of the links and info I have found. Some of this is for people who edit locally and then upload. I edit and host on wordpress.com at this time but might have to change in order to avoid this editor.

Mazda Miata MX5 Cup Holders

It is kind of crazy when thinking about a car that in a car known for prowess on the track that so much is devoted to its cup holders, lack there of or improving and adding them but there is.

I have a 2000 Miata and the next year they improved them! I thought I would put together an article on the ideas, mods and hacks that people use to improve the cup holder situation in the own Miatas both for my research on improving my own car and as a source of ideas and info for others online as well.

Come back as as I add to and improve this post.

Miata Cup Holders

Here is the first installment of articles focused on driving and enjoying my Mazda Miata MX5 convertible. I have a 2000 Mazda Miata MX5 5 speed manual. I really enjoy that car. I had a Triumph Spitfire as a teen and developed a love that type and style of convertible. It still persists today!

A couple of searches online and you will quickly realize that there are tons of people who enjoy these two but the camps are very different. You have a group of radical hot rodders doing v8 conversions producing 400 HP animals that can not stay connected to the road. There are racers making 250 track cars designed to stick to the road like glue but hang on to your wallet loosely! They are easy to add turbo or super chargers to and the list goes on.

There are a couple other camps that are  not even really in the race camp at all. There are the young kids who think they are cool and affordable as well as dependable. There is a camp that wants to re-capture the old MG/Triumph classic look with retro luggage racks and wooden shift knobs and steering wheels and more.

There is another camp and that is the adventure driver. I belong mostly in that camp. a trip that can last all day or few days and tour the scenic byways and back roads (the curvier the better) with the top down and the sun and wind battering you for hours and hours. Unique small towns and hotels and motels that people forgot years ago. People you would never think of meeting but are glad you did. A hidden coffee or sandwich shop owned by a local and typically only frequented by locals but all with a story and personality. That is the element in which I enjoy the Miata the most for sure!

The other thing I enjoy is customizing it to make those adventures more fun and enjoyable. Being it comfort for myself and a better set of cup holders or performance and handling to increase the adrenaline rush in the curves.

Come join me and lets go down the road!

WAAAM – Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum

Another post in discovering weekend and day trip adventures near home.

What a great local spot for a day trip with wife or family? I discovered paper card models a few years back. This would be a great chance to get to see some of the old planes and cars in real life that I am trying to model. These are real working machines from a time long ago. They have scheduled Fly In’s when people fly in in their vintage crafts. Check them out. I know I am going to.

Of the many things I find interesting in Linux is a distro devoted to classic arcade games. There are more than one but Puppy seems to have a really good one that can run from a thumb drive or on a Raspberry Pi.

I will develop this article around checking them out,
